Help Us Name One of Our New Food Waste Collection Vehicles!
From Monday 30 March, food waste collections have been launching across Erewash and England: a major milestone in helping us recycle more, cut carbon emissions, and make our borough even greener.
This new service forms part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling legislation, helping to stop food waste ending up in our black bins. Instead, food waste will be transformed into biogas (a form of green energy) and fertiliser for local farms at an anaerobic digestion facility in Derby.
As part of this rollout, we’ve added six brand new food waste collection vehicles to our fleet. One of these has already been proudly named Ernie, after a local boy with autism who adores bin lorries and recently visited our waste depot on his 8th birthday. Four more vehicles will soon be named by pupils through a local schools' competition.
Now, it’s your turn! We are now asking residents to name the sixth and final waste vehicle in a public vote. Read on to find out more and make your voice heard.
We’re asking Erewash residents to help us choose the name for the final vehicle from a shortlist packed with puns, personality, and plenty of food themed fun. The name with the most votes will be the winner.
"The launch of food waste collections is a really important step in making Erewash greener and more sustainable. We know residents care deeply about doing their bit for the environment, and this is a simple change that will make a big difference: cutting greenhouse gas emissions and turning food waste into clean energy and fertiliser for local farms. Naming our new collection vehicles is a fun way for the community to get involved in this next chapter for Erewash, and I’m looking forward to seeing which name residents choose."
Councillor Alfrey, Lead Member for Environment.
